Massiv — Storage in Solid Wood

Massiv begins with the material. The frames are made from solid birch, with tops and shelves in solid birch or oak. The wood is the same all the way through and can be cared for, sanded and repainted as life leaves its marks.

Over three decades, Massiv has grown and been refined into a compact series of furniture for the whole home. Tall and low cabinets, display cabinets, chests of drawers and storage benches accommodate different needs and can take on new roles as the home changes throughout life.

Throughout the series, the same care is given to material, proportions and function. Fitted doors and drawers, movable interiors and egg-oil tempera allow the furniture to be adapted and renewed over time. A storage system — and a natural place for the things we choose to live with.

    A philosophy for the home

Massiv reflects Norrgavel’s view of the home as something that takes shape over time. A home does not need to be finished, and a piece of furniture does not need to be tied to one particular place or purpose. It is about choosing with care, living closely with what we have and leaving room for change.

This thinking can also be found in the dimensions. They begin with what actually needs to fit inside — folded clothes, textiles, books, heirlooms and everyday objects. Drawers, shelves and cabinets are dimensioned according to the life that surrounds them, rather than the other way around.

In this way, Massiv also expresses a broader idea: to make room for the things that are used, returned to and matter to us, and to let them follow us through different rooms and stages of life.

    Continued life

A Massiv piece with many years behind it can be one of the most beautiful. The tone of the wood changes, surfaces acquire traces of use and the furniture becomes increasingly marked by the life around it. There is no reason to undo what time has added.

But when the need arises, the furniture can also return to Norrgavel’s workshop in Lammhult for renovation or repainting. There, it can receive the care it needs before returning home to continue being used — perhaps in the same place, perhaps with a new purpose.
